About LinuxFX Computing

"First we thought the PC was a calculator. Then we found out how to turn numbers into letters with ASCII — and we thought it was a typewriter. Then we discovered graphics, and we thought it was a television. With the World Wide Web, we’ve realized it’s a brochure". Douglas Adams

Linuxfx Computing have been involved in computing since 1982, this involved punched tape, tardis-like computer units with a text based computer terminal. Moving on from linear based layout coding to various Windows systems from MSDos through to XP and Vista both within domestic and industrial scenarios.

1998 brought Linux operating systems, running various distributions such as:
  • Red Hat
  • Ubuntu
  • Slackware
  • Mandrake
  • SUSE
  • Fedora
  • Debian (current version 'Lenny').

As Linux distributions go, Ubuntu is an excellent way to start using Linux. This distribution has grown and matured from it's earlier releases into a flexible, robust system which is easy to install and start using straight away. Ubuntu comes in different formats, there is the 'Long Term Releases' the 'Standard Release' (every 6 months) and also a 'Server' option to download. All Linux distributions require a small learning curve, but Ubuntu is an easy transition from either another Linux distribution or even a Microsoft environment. With a multitude of forums, user groups and mailing lists, you will not be short of help and advice should you require any answers to your questions.

If you feel you want a more solid and stable distribution, then Debian is the system to install. Debian is the system that has spawned many other distributions including Knoppix and more recently Ubuntu. See the dedicated Debian page for further information.

Interest in Linux sytems then brought about membership of Manchester Linux User Group and South Cheshire Linux User Groups. Website design and computer assistance has been a natural evolution for the last decade and more, this has included:

  • Website design and optimisation.
  • Computer assistance.
  • Ethical hacking (USA).
  • Home tuition.
  • Home networking - configuring PC's, laptops and printer networks.
  • Virus / Trojan / Spyware removal.
  • Computer forensics.
  • Computer set-ups.
  • Windows / Linux Password Recovery.
  • .... and much more.

Interests include:
  • Cryptography.
  • Computer Science and Forensics.
  • C Programming.
  • BASH Shell Scripting.

Currently, Linuxfx are in the process of instigating a new Linux User Group based in East Cheshire.
The meetings will be held at The Society Rooms, Macclesfield. For further information please email Linuxfx.
